Freedom House reports: No Freedom of Press in Armenia

Freedom House, a New York based independent nongovernmental organization that supports the expansion of freedom throughout the world, has just published the 2007 update of Nations in Transit, a comprehensive study of reform in the former Soviet states. The report, is based on a methodology rooted in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and tracks the reform record of 29 countries , among them Armenia.

According to the report, there has not been freedom of the press in Armenia, for the fifth year in a row, since, the A1Plus TV channel was banned, although Armenian Laws and the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, but in effect that right is now jeopardized. In 2007 Armeniath place among 195 countries, together with Pakistan and Moldavia. occupies 144

In an interview with Radio Liberty, the Director of Freedom House, Christopher Walker, Director of Studies at Freedom House, emphasized the pressure exerted by the authorities in Armenia during election campaigns and the extreme bias shown on television in favor of the government candidate, while projecting the opposition candidate in a highly negative light.
