The National Assembly reacts to the government’s new program
[Summarized from Azatutyun Radio broadcast, April 30, 2008]
Evidently, the five-day period to study the program was not necessary.
The 3 dissenting votes belonged to the Zharangutyun Opposition party, who dissented, according to their representative Stepan Safaryan, because, he said, the program was confused, and the large number of suggestions his party made had not been included:
When I study the first part of the program, I get the impression that it is centered on the human being…everything for the human being, all the conditions for his full rights and freedoms…
..but when I continue on to other sections, it changes into a government centered
program, and the connection between the government and the citizen becomes indirect…
Another member of parliament, Vartan Bostanjyan of the Prosperous Armenia Party had some questions about the government’s grandiose plan to turn Armenia into a regional business and finance center:
This (program) looks like it was put together by a globe dominating, powerful country…generated for the feeble-minded…
Sure, why not become a business center. But HOW?
Sure, let’s become a financial center. But I’d like to know HOW, when we don’t have any finances?
Armen Martirosyan, another member of the Zharangutyun opposition party, said he would like to see a competitive press in Armenia, and asked,
Are you ready to open the A1Plus and Noyan Tapan TV stations?
